Soraya Thornton, Owner & Designer, La Costa & My La Costa What impact do you want to have on people and what valuable lesson would you like to share? I want people to see me and say, “if she can do it, so can I!” At the age of 50 with 2 high-school, college-bound children, a husband and a big mortgage, I decided to do what was seemingly impossible to most, create a successful jewelry company and brand. Fortunately, my family believed in my determination as I set out to establish La Costa as a jewelry leader in a very crowded and competitive industry. Fast forward five short years, and La Costa is a well-known brand with marquis retail partners throughout the country. I had no idea when I was 20, 30, or even 40, I would be as successful and fulfilled as I am today, but that just goes to prove that life is fluid and you never know where it will lead you but if you stay true to yourself, follow your passion, you can achieve anything you desire by taking steps towards your goal, each and every day. This is also why I decided to launch the Ambassador Program. I wanted to provide a platform to allow women to be empowered and successful while eliminating the many hurdles and expenses involved in creating a business. Through the Ambassador Program, women can easily and quickly be profitable and take control of their financial future. So, aim high, work hard, and surround yourself with motivated people that love and support you. Before you know it, you will be achieving your goals and setting new heights. Whether you are 9 or 90 years young, never stop learning, growing and achieving. Where do you come from and what did you study? I was the youngest of three children and born in 1963 in Cartagena, Colombia. My dad was a Navy engineer and my mom was a home-maker that turned her many talents into small businesses, from baking cakes to making custom dresses. We moved from Colombia to Washington DC when I was 3 years old. I attended elementary school in Maryland, and lived in Miami from middle school to sophomore year in college. I transferred to George Washington University, and graduated with a BS in Computer & Information Systems and a Minor in Mathematics. It seems strange to most that I would have chosen a technical career path being naturally creative, fashion forward and artistic, but I found programming and math as an art form. In college, I channeled my creative talent in programming efficient code and solving equations. What inspired you to start La Costa and the Ambassador Program? Surprisingly, La Costa evolved from my desire to spend more time with my kids, and fulfill my passion to create. It is my third career, and by far the most rewarding, fun and exciting. I graduated from college in 1986 and developed a very successful 14 year career as an International Account Executive for major software companies. I married an amazing man and we have 2 fabulous kids, now young adults. I left my big corporate job and 6 digit salary to be an Algebra Teacher at the same school as my kids. During that time, I started making jewelry and to my surprise, my jewelry was a big hit with my friends and family. I started selling at our local green market, and holiday bazaars. Over a period of 7 years, my success and confidence grew. I decided to take the leap of faith and invest all of my energies in creating the successful brilliant gemstone collections that has evolved over the past 5 years to what you enjoy today. The Ambassador Program, is the culmination of sharing my success and opportunity with like-minded women who are driven, motivated and want to have a well-balanced life with financial independence. What impact do you want to have on the world? I want to bring beauty and opportunity to the world. From the women that feels beautiful by wearing La Costa, to impacting lives by donating thousands of dollars to charities, to giving women the opportunity to own their own business, earn a flexible income to achieve their financial goals and independence. How does La Costa pay it forward? When I started La Costa over12 years ago, funds were very scarce and every dollar was reinvested. So, I decided to give of my time and talent by teaching a beading class at an assisted living facility for the elderly. The ladies enjoyed the class so much that it didn’t take long for there to be a wait list. They appreciated me very much but I felt so blessed in seeing their happiness and feeling of accomplishment in their jewelry creations. La Costa is committed to donating 10% of our time, 10% of our product, and 10% of our profits to charities. We support numerous charity events, donate to silent auctions and have contributed over $200,000 to worthy causes such as cancer research, animal protection, and family support. Though I believe our greatest contribution will be the success of our Ambassadors. Women fulfilling their dreams and financial goals through the Ambassador opportunity. As the saying goes, give someone a fish and they will eat for a day, teach them how to fish and they will eat a lifetime. What is special about La Costa jewelry?
